Frequently asking questions about the smallest and most subtle elements of your computing experience can yield interesting insights into computers and their history. Today we look at the little block of text that sits at the front of the command line.

Windows 8 ships with a built-in SkyDrive app however it doesn’t allow you to add files to your SkyDrive account. For that we have the Desktop SkyDrive app which has a handy selective sync feature as well.

Whether you’re using a Chromebook or you’re just interested in switching from installed desktop apps to browser-based ones, web-based software can replace many of the programs people use on their computers — and can often improve on them.

One advantage to using web-based apps is that they’ll natively sync across you devices — for example, to your smartphone. Your data will always be backed up and accessible away from your computer.

A laptop is a marvel of engineering. So much work goes into designing and manufacturing all the individual pieces of hardware before combining them with software that’s taken decades to build. After going through all this work, laptop manufacturers are paid to make their laptops slower and more frustrating to use.

The PC ecosystem’s race to the bottom and cut-throat pricing means that many computer manufacturers aren’t focused on providing a good experience — they’re focused on releasing the cheapest laptops possible and making some additional money by loading the laptop with bloatware.

Many commands in Word have keyboard shortcuts assigned to them, making it quicker to apply formatting, save the file, and perform other tasks on your documents. These keyboard shortcuts can be customized, and you can assign shortcuts to commands that do not currently have them.

We will show you how to access the keyboard shortcuts for commands in Word and add new shortcuts or change current ones.

There are a couple of ways to access the options screen for customizing the Ribbon, which is where the dialog box for customizing keyboard shortcuts is located. One method is to click the FILE tab.

Now that the Windows Store has reached 70,000 apps and it’s been over six months since Windows 8 launched, let’s take a look at the Windows Store and determine just how competitive it is with the other tablet platforms.

Whether you have family videos that you’d like to preserve or the latest Hollywood blockbuster, it’s worth your time to make sure that your investment doesn’t become scratched, lost, stolen, or otherwise useless.

Making copies of commercial discs (such as Hollywood movies) requires an extra step that isn’t necessary for homemade discs. Commercial discs are encrypted to make copying them a little more difficult. The first part of this guide will show you how to bypass that encryption, but it will be irrelevant to you if you’re only looking to backup a homemade DVD, such as one of your wedding. So skip this first “Bypassing Disc Encryption” section if you’re only looking to backup homemade discs right now.
