To help keep online accounts secure, two-step verification is becoming increasingly common. Apple is the latest firm to introduce this extra level of authentication, meaning that logging into your account requires more than just a basic password.

With the feature enabled, you’ll need to not only enter a password (or a recovery key), but also use a pre-registered device to generate code to complete the login process.

Start by heading over to the My Apple ID website and click the ’Manage your Apple ID’ button.

Just when you thought the changes had settled down for a bit Google has come forth with yet another surprise announcement. Google is launching a new fork of the Webkit rendering engine called Blink. The new browser engine is due to see ‘first light’ for browser users via Chrome 28.

The main area of ‘contention’ that appears to have led to the fork are the two separate ‘multiprocess architectures’ maintained by the Chromium Project and Webkit developers. But that is not the only reason…

From the CNET blog post: It’s not just technical matters that led to the split, though. There never has been a single Webkit agenda for Apple and Google, and social tensions persisted as the two groups tried to work together.

Opera has been tracking the Chromium build of Webkit for its own upcoming browser changes and will follow the new Google fork instead of Webkit. Both the Chromium Project and Webkit developers will also begin to strip unneeded code relating to each other’s browsers from their code bases. You can learn more about all the upcoming changes by visiting the blog posts linked below…

Blink: A rendering engine for the Chromium project [The Chromium Blog]

Yesterday Apple joined a host of other companies that offer two-step verification in response to the increasing level of security threats to user accounts. Those of you who have been setting up two-step verification across the board for your online accounts can now add your Apple ID to the ‘completed’ list.

Setting up two-step verification will require you to log into your Apple ID account and go into the account management options. From there it will only take a few minutes to set up (see instructions page linked to below).

Here is how the process will work once you have two-step verification set up for your account…

In this candid blog post, Don Melton shares how he and his team kept the browser secret.

Melton is best known for starting and managing the Safari and Webkit projects at Apple, he shares stories of what he had to go through to hide Safari from the world to ensure that Steve could reveal a totally new and surprising development at Macworld 2003.

For much of the time we spent developing Safari — long before it was called by that name — it pretended to be Microsoft Internet Explorer. Specifically, Internet Explorer for Mac, which Apple had provided with the OS since 1998. Less than six months before Safari debuted, it started pretending to be a Mozilla browser.

Why did we do this? And how did we make Safari pretend to be these browsers when its code and behavior were so different?
